It’s interesting how terminology changes over the years, especially in the Sex Industry. There were many words that were considered insulting when we first opened – Brothel, Prostitute and Hooker to name a few.
Instead, we referred to ourselves as a Massage Parlour and the Ladies/Escorts were Masseuses.
I had always thought of myself as a Manager, so the first time a lady came for an interview and asked if I was the “Madam”, I nearly fell off my chair with laughter. I can honestly say I had never thought of myself as a Madam!
Nowadays I often hear people referring to The Pelican Club as the best Brothel in Auckland! Ladies call themselves Sex Workers or Escorts.
Every time I hear this terminology, it takes me back to the days before Sex Work was legal in New Zealand. We were not even allowed to acknowledge that the Ladies had sex with the Clients. We sent every Gentleman and Lady through to the room, telling them to enjoy their massage with their sexy Masseuse!
Oh, How times have changed!
